Inspired by TG Swapping Caps series Humans of the Great Shift
When the Great Shift happened, I was walking through Shibuya, thinking about dinner. One moment, I was Kazuki Watanabe, a 22-year-old university student. The next, I was somewhere else—someone else.
I gasped and stumbled, suddenly heavier, my balance off. My hands—no, not mine—gripped a kitchen counter. I looked down. My arms were thicker, covered in light hair. My stomach bulged slightly over the waistband of sweatpants.
I bolted to try and find a bathroom with a mirror. A bald man with a round face and a beard stared back. Who the hell is this?
Panic flooded me. This wasn’t right. This wasn’t me. I had a girlfriend back in Japan! I had a life!
A phone buzzed on the counter. I hesitated, then picked it up. A message from who I can only assume is James’ partner:
“Baby, are you okay? I’m scared.”
I swallowed hard. My reflection—James’ reflection—looked just as lost as I felt.
The world had changed forever. I had no idea how to live this life.
And yet…it was now mine.
